Research

Research is the key to finding answers to our questions about cancer - what causes cell damage, why cells turn cancerous, how cancer grows and spreads and how we can most effectively attack it.

Cancer Council is the leading funder of independent cancer research and related activities in Australia. Research is Cancer Council’s largest single investment, with $49 million granted to cancer research, research scholarships and fellowships in 2008. Our commitment to research is only made possible through the support of donors and fundraisers.

Finding new life - saving answers

The results of our commitment to research have led to significant advances in the early detection, treatment and survival rates of cancer in Australia. More than 60% of cancer patients will now survive more than five years after diagnosis, and many common cancers that were once fatal are now treated successfully.

As the Australian population ages however, the incidence of cancer is set to rise. Your continued support is vital, and deeply appreciated by all those whose lives are affected by this disease.

Cancer Council Research Highlights Report

Cancer Council has published its first national Research Highlights Report. The report profiles some of the hundreds of research projects funded by the Cancer Council each year, introduces the people behind the research, and illustrates the significant contribution that Cancer Council donors and supporters have made to furthering cancer research in Australia.
