There are lots of ways you can get involved with Daffodil Day, the simplest being to make a donation or purchase Daffodil Day merchandise during August. Your donation will be helping Cancer Council raise much needed funds to support vital cancer research, develop cancer prevention programs, and provide patient support (like Cancer Council 13 11 20) for the tens of thousands of Australian lives affected by cancer. - The daffodil was chosen as the symbol of hope for all affected by cancer because of its reputation as a hardy annual flower, pushing its way through the frozen earth after a long winter to herald the return of spring, new life, vitality and growth. As one of the first flowers of spring, the daffodil symbolises rebirth and new beginnings. To Cancer Council, the daffodil represents hope for a cancer-free future.
Daffodil Day officially falls on the fourth Friday in August each year. In 2016, Daffodil Day will be held on Friday 26th August.
It’s a day where we can all show our support for the people we know (or even those we don’t know) who have been affected by cancer. Daffodil Day merchandise is on sale throughout August, and you can donate to Daffodil Day at anytime.
Buying Daffodil Day merchandise
- Fresh daffodils are sold on Daffodil Day - Friday 26 August - at volunteer sites in major shopping centres or railway stations across the country.
The very popular Dougal bear is available from volunteer sites on Daffodil Day, Friday 26 August or from Coles Express stores. Be quick, as stocks are limited. To find your closest volunteer site location contact: 1300 65 65 85 or email your state.
This year's merchandise range includes the most popular Daffodil Day items. Cancer Council encourages everyone to show they care about beating cancer by purchasing and wearing the Daffodil pin ($5) in honour of a loved one this Daffodil Day. The 2016 range includes Daffodil pins ($5), Pens ($6) and Dougal Bear ($10). You can also buy fresh daffodils on Daffodil Day.
Additional merchandise items may be available to purchase at volunteer sites on Daffodil Day. Please note that the range may vary between states and territories and sites.

Daffodil Day merchandise can be purchased from our corporate partners in the lead up to Daffodil Day, or at one of our volunteer sites on Friday 26 August 2016. You can also order Daffodil Day merchandise online to sell.
Selling Daffodil Day Merchandise
You will receive a merchandise box that contains Daffodil Day Pins ($5) and Pens ($6).
To help your fundraising efforts you’ll also be given an event poster, banking details and event information.
Merchandise will be sent out from July 2016. From July, you can expect to receive your merchandise three to four days after registration.
You can start selling your merchandise as soon as you receive it. While the official date of Daffodil Day is Friday 26 August, merchandise is sold throughout the months of July and August.

Volunteering on Daffodil Day
Cancer Council requires thousands of volunteers to assist with the preparation of the event and on the day itself. If you have some time (as little or as much as you can spare) please register online or by calling 1300 65 65 85.
No, your site leader will coordinate all banking so please follow their instructions.
We are advocates of the ‘buddy system’ and advise volunteers to always sell in pairs and stay together.
Introduce yourself to the site leader and be inducted upon arrival. If you are at a Train Station you may be required to undergo a brief Induction from the Station Officer.
The site leader will ask you to sign in and they will provide you with an ID sticker - please wear this at all times whilst volunteering. Always remove the sticker when you are on a break or in certain circumstances, e.g. going to the bank. At the end of your shift, you need to return the sticker and sign out with the site leader.
Daffodil Day goes on rain, hail or shine! The stall will be moved to an undercover location where possible. We advise that you dress for the weather conditions and bring a wet weather jacket, poncho or umbrella.
We understand emergencies happen and at times, public transport doesn’t run to schedule. If you are running late, as a courtesy, please contact your State or Territory Cancer Council office. We ask that you also get in contact with us should you no longer be able to volunteer. You will be provided with an appropriate contact number in your final confirmation email.
We advise that you arrive at least 5 minutes before your shift starts to allow sufficient time to find the meeting place and/or stall, introduce yourself to the relevant site leader and sign in.
Unfortunately we are unable to provide Daffodil Day t-shirts to our wonderful volunteers -we are saving those hard earned daffodil dollars for cancer research, prevention and support services. So we encourage you to wear something yellow if you have it.
You will be on your feet most of the day and for your own safety we advise that you wear comfortable, enclosed shoes. If possible, wear yellow clothing or accessories!
We recommend that you bring a water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and wet weather gear, just in case. Please refrain from bringing any valuables or large bags as there is no secure storage for these items and we will not accept responsibility for any lost or stolen items.
Yes, you are welcome to volunteer with your friends, colleagues or as a group. All members of the group need to be registered as a volunteer.
As a volunteer on Daffodil Day you have signed up to sell merchandise and fresh daffodils to raise funds for Cancer Council. Being a volunteer you are our advocate on the day, helping to promote the cause and our mission.
Donating to Daffodil Day
All donations are in Australian Dollars. If you accidently donate an incorrect amount via credit card please contact 1300 65 65 85 and we will refund the requested amount to the credit card used to make the original donation.
Our online fundraising system accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Diners cards. In some cases American Express and Diners cards may not be available in your state or territory.
If you have provided a valid email address when making an online donation, you will receive a tax receipt via email shortly after you complete your donation.
Yes – but unfortunately the website is not able to process international payments. We would be happy to receive your donation from overseas - just call +61 2 8063 4100.
Every payment made on our online fundraising system is fully secured, using high-level encryption technology – the same standard most Australian banks use for their internet banking.
The site uses 128 bit SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) between your browser and our website, with 1024 bit java encryption between our website and the Australian Banking Network. You have more chance of having your credit card details misused when paying for something in person, than through our online fundraising website.
Yes, all donations of $2.00 or more are tax deductible. Simply fill in all the requested details when making an online donation (including a valid email address), and you will automatically receive an official tax receipt from Cancer Council.

Yes! Donating via text is a legitimate way to give and we hope one that will be quick and simple for you.
The technology behind Premium SMS (PSMS) donations has been successfully used for competition and voting lines in Australia for the past 15 years.
Until now, however, the use of text giving via PSMS for charitable fundraising has not been widely available in Australia. We are excited to be able to let our supporters give this way for the very first time.
You must obtain permission from the bill payer before sending a text message. If you are under 16 years old, you must have your parent or guardian’s permission.
All donations go towards Cancer Council’s research, prevention programs and patient support. We have multiple keywords for different locations and channels but we only have one Premium SMS number 1999 8877.

Yes, all text donations are tax deductible. After donating you will receive tax receipt via SMS.
Yes, after donating you’ll receive two free automated ‘thank you’ texts addressed from ‘CancerCo’, the first will give you the option to dedicate a daffodil, the second contains a tax receipt. You should retain this receipt for use at tax time.
If you are an Optus post-paid customer, you will also have a detailed account of your donation on your bill which you can use as a receipt at tax time.
If you misplace your tax receipt, you will need to contact Cancer Council on 1300 65 65 85, we will assist in re-issuing your tax receipt. We will need the mobile number you donated from to issue the replacement receipt.
No. When you make a donation, it is a one-off donation, not a subscription. If you would like to donate more than $5, you can send multiple $5 donation text messages using the same method. Alternatively, if you would like to donate a larger amount, please visit our website daffodilday.com.au/donate
At a later date, you may get a call from the Cancer Council team asking whether you would like to sign to a regular giving program in your state. You can opt out from all Cancer Council communications by calling 1300 65 65 85.

The maximum amount that can be donated varies by carrier:

After every $30 donated via text, you will receive a courtesy message from Cancer Council updating you of how much you’ve donated, and to thank you for your support.

Please note that monthly donation limits may vary by carrier according to the standard PSMS monthly transaction limits
For each $5 donation made, the charity will receive $4.95. Charities incur a small charge of 1% of donated revenue which is an administration fee charged by OpenMarket. The mobile network operators do not retain any of the donation, or charge any fees to the charities for the service.
There will be up to 15 charities participating in the pilot text to donate program, with their campaigns going live at different times. Any donation made to Cancer Council will only go to our causes and not divided between charities.
