It started out of the blue. Not an average pain, but the kind that makes a strong, grown man double over. From that exact moment, our world shattered. The diagnosis came quickly: advanced small cell lung cancer, already spread to almost every part of his body. While one doctor gave us a year, another called privately to say six months at most. To the exact day, six months from when we first heard the dreaded C-word, he was gone.
What filled those six months was an agonizing battle. Chemo, immunotherapy, radiation—nothing worked. It was devastating to watch this glorious man wither away physically, but completely heartbreaking to see him lose his spark. He was a man of humour, kindness, and infinite patience, a true bringer of joy to everyone he met. But the day they told him he would never walk again, his spirit broke.
Doctors tried everything to fight the pain. Starting from common over-the-counter pain relievers to codeine, oxycodone titration, fentanyl patches, and a morphine syringe driver. When none of it helped, we turned to hospice care, where they cycled through ketamine, heavy cocktails of morphine and midazolam, and finally methadone.
Cancer sucks. It sucked the life out of our most precious human. Our human. Our forever human.
We will complete the Daffodil Day Dip in his memory on the 16 August at 1:08 pm. Two years after his final breath. We are braving the cold water to honour his incredible strength, to carry his love forward, and to raise vital funds so that future families might be spared this agony.
