DGP Update

01/04/23 (Saturday) was an April Fools day I will NEVER forget.

I had blood tests done only a week prior as part of my annual checkup and also I’d been feeling a little off colour for a few months.

At about 7:30am my GP rang me and suggested I call an ambulance straight away and get to St Andrew’s Hospital in Ipswich immediately. Anemia was the first new word on the list.

Being a bloke and doing what blokes do I said I would go in on Monday morning. I did have a band practice that day and of course, music takes priority over health.

More tests, CT scans, blood transfusions and Iron infusions and so began my next chapter.

19/04/23 was the day I came to realise just how brief my stay on this planet could be.

A tumour almost totally blocking my large intestine was discovered.

The tumour was removed with good margins and now the wait for results from pathology as to the extent/spread of this mongrel fucking disease.

What goes through one’s mind whilst waiting for medical test results can only be described as madness.

All deeds done both good and bad, all harms and happiness. Love lost and found. And of course family.

I am definitely the luckiest man alive for so many reasons but definitely near the top of the list was the news that, at this time, no chemo or radiation was needed. Also having family around me was an amazing assistance in my recovery.

I’m still far from being out of the woods and my surgeon is my best friend for at least the next four years.

In short, 2 & 1/2 years ago I thought I was going to die.

In the second half of 2023 I met an amazing woman who gave me a reason, purpose, and desire to be the best I can and actually look after myself.

Odette, you have made me realise exactly what I want and need in life. Your love is fiercely protective of me and everything I hold dear to my heart. I know you have my back. You are an intelligent, sensual, generous, loving human with a tough exterior and a heart of gold. Thank you so much for all you do for me and for us. I do love you so very much. I am so looking forward to all our tomorrows together.

So where am I today?

Physically, I’m back to 94kg after losing 17kg. I feel as good as I ever have. It did take six months to shed the extra kg’s.

Psychologically, as well as I have been for a very long time. My family and a few close friends have been an important part of that journey.

Emotionally, where do I start. My self esteem is now at a level akin to an almost carefree teenager. Again, my family and Odette have been the biggest contributors to this part of my life. You loved me when I didn’t love myself.
